Poultry generally had free rein of the barnyard and this laissez-faire method of chicken-keeping worked well, but laying hens also required calcium to strengthen the egg shells and supplements were provided. Where available, oyster shells were an excellent source of dietary calcium. Where not, flaked, green bone was used. Life in rural America was always harsh but especially so after the tragic event of war. Despite local, state, and federal government’s efforts to supply provisions and ease suffering during and post war, their actions proved inadequate, as the very idea of being dependent on charity violated the self-respect of yeoman farmers and urban workers alike. Oxen can pull heavier loads, and for a longer period of time than horses but are also slower than their equine counterparts. However, their steady, dependable gate make oxen the preferred engine for hauling freight. One notable instance being the “Noble Train of Artillery,” where Colonel Henry Knox led an expedition to transport the heavy guns captured at Fort Ticonderoga to the Continental Army camps outside Boston during the winter of 1775-76. Teams of oxen drug the cumbersome cannons through miles of rough terrain in what has been called “one of the most stupendous feats of logistics” of the entire war.

1/30 scale
Matte Finish
2 Piece Set

TRW004 “Mounted Wolf's Head w/Shield & Lance”

U.S. 7th Cavalry trooper trying to bandage his own wounded arm while still holding his Army Colt revolver.
