Near the village of Assaye in western India, a heavily outnumbered force under \u003cstrong\u003eMajor General Arthur Wellesley\u003c\/strong\u003e attacked and defeated the combined armies of \u003cstrong\u003eDaulatrao Scindia and the Bhonsle Raja of Berar\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eM-WIN-11\u003c\/strong\u003e represents a member of the Maratha cavalry during this campaign. The Maratha armies could field very large numbers of horsemen, giving them considerable mobility and a strong tradition of fast-moving warfare. During the 1803 campaign, however, their cavalry was generally less decisive than the better-trained infantry and powerful artillery that formed the strongest elements of Scindia’s army.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eAt Assaye, Wellesley’s force was placed under immense pressure as it advanced against a much larger Maratha army. The fighting became extremely severe, particularly around the artillery positions, and the battle ended as one of Wellesley’s earliest major victories.
