Each community maintained its own leadership while recognising the authority of the paramount chief.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe longbow was a principal weapon used by Powhatan warriors. Generally measuring between five and six feet in length, these bows were made from native woods such as witch-hazel and hickory.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAs English settlement expanded, relations with the Powhatan deteriorated, leading to the Anglo-Powhatan Wars.
