One of the greatest examples of this was the Roman marching camp, constructed to protect soldiers whenever the army halted during a military campaign.

At the end of each day's march, legionaries were assigned the task of creating a defensible encampment. This usually involved digging a perimeter ditch, building an earthen rampart and erecting a protective palisade. The work could occupy several hours, even after a long and exhausting march.

The Greek historian Polybius described the organisation of Republican Roman camps, which generally followed a carefully planned layout, adapted to the terrain and the number of troops requiring accommodation.

Within these fortified camps, tents provided the soldiers with shelter and living quarters.
