The 1st Special Battalion, Louisiana Infantry, widely known as Wheat's Tigers, was a notorious and battle-hardened Confederate unit organized in May 1861 by Major Chatham Roberdeau Wheat. Composed heavily of Irish immigrants and New Orleans wharf workers, they were recognized for their fierce fighting in the Eastern Theater, including Manassas, the Valley Campaign, and the Seven Days' Battles, before disbanding in 1862.
