Long before Rome dominated the Italian peninsula, it faced determined resistance from the Samnites, a group of peoples inhabiting the rugged central and southern Apennines.

During the Samnite Wars of the 4th and early 3rd centuries BC, Rome and the Samnites fought repeatedly for control and influence in Italy. The conflict proved an important stage in Rome's rise to regional supremacy.
