GWA-11(53) – Stokes Mortar Crew – 53rd Battalion
The introduction of the Stokes mortar gave infantry battalions a highly useful means of projecting explosive fire into trenches and positions beyond direct line of sight.
GWA-11(53) represents a Stokes mortar team associated with the 53rd Battalion AIF, part of the 14th Brigade of Australia's 5th Division.
Mortar crews were specialist soldiers whose work required coordination between the weapon operator and the men handling ammunition. Their presence behind the riflemen adds an important layer to a battlefield display, illustrating how infantry attacks depended upon supporting weapons as well as individual rifles and bayonets.
Position the team in a shell hole, shallow emplacement or trench while GWA-08(53) advances across the ground ahead.
For collectors concentrating on the 53rd Battalion, this set expands the unit from ordinary infantry into a much more complete fighting formation.
Available from The Military Workshop – a highly detailed John Jenkins Designs Stokes mortar position representing the supporting firepower of the 53rd Battalion AIF.
