The rugged Grumman F4F Wildcat was one of the United States Navy’s most important fighters during the difficult opening months of the Pacific War. Although facing formidable Japanese opposition, skilled Wildcat pilots demonstrated just how effective the aircraft could be.

ACE-215 recreates the F4F-3 Wildcat “White F-15” of VF-3, flown by Lieutenant Edward Henry “Butch” O’Hare from USS Lexington in February 1942.

On 20 February 1942, O’Hare famously attacked a formation of Japanese bombers threatening his carrier and was credited with shooting down five aircraft. His actions made him the U.S. Navy’s first fighter ace of the Second World War and earned him the Medal of Honor.
