Frank Luke Jr. was one of the most famous American fighter pilots of World War I and became known as the “Arizona Balloon Buster.”

Early Life

  • Born: May 19, 1897
  • Place: Phoenix, Arizona
  • Served in the United States Army Air Service during World War I.

Why He Became Famous

Luke specialized in attacking heavily defended German observation balloons. These balloons were critical to enemy artillery spotting and were extremely dangerous targets because they were protected by:

  • anti-aircraft guns,
  • machine guns,
  • and fighter aircraft.

Despite this, Luke destroyed:

  • 14 German observation balloons,
  • and several enemy aircraft,

all within a remarkably short combat career in 1918.

Aircraft

Luke flew the:

  • SPAD S.XIII

one of the premier Allied fighter aircraft of the war.

Final Mission

On September 29, 1918, Luke attacked German balloons near Murvaux, France. Although wounded and pursued, he reportedly continued fighting after landing his aircraft and died during the engagement.

His courage and aggressiveness quickly made him legendary.

Medal of Honor

Frank Luke Jr. was posthumously awarded the:

  • Medal of Honor

for extraordinary heroism in combat.

Legacy

Luke Air Force Base in Arizona was named after him:

  • Luke Air Force Base

He is often compared with fellow American ace:

  • Eddie Rickenbacker

though Luke’s combat career was much shorter and more dramatic.

Interesting Fact

Frank Luke scored most of his victories in just a few weeks, making his rise one of the fastest and most intense combat records of World War I aviation history.
