Frank Luke Jr. was one of the most famous American fighter pilots of World War I and became known as the “Arizona Balloon Buster.”

Why He Became Famous
Luke specialized in attacking heavily defended German observation balloons. These balloons were critical to enemy artillery spotting and were extremely dangerous targets because they were protected by:
- anti-aircraft guns,
- machine guns,
- and fighter aircraft.
Despite this, Luke destroyed:
- 14 German observation balloons,
- and several enemy aircraft,
all within a remarkably short combat career in 1918.

one of the premier Allied fighter aircraft of the war.
Final Mission
On September 29, 1918, Luke attacked German balloons near Murvaux, France. Although wounded and pursued, he reportedly continued fighting after landing his aircraft and died during the engagement.
His courage and aggressiveness quickly made him legendary.
