ACE-42 – Macchi M.5 Italian Flying Boat – U.S. Naval Service, Black 33, 263rd Squadron
The Macchi M.5 was an elegant Italian flying-boat fighter developed during the First World War. Designed primarily for maritime operations, its compact hull and upper-mounted engine gave it a distinctive appearance unlike the conventional land-based fighters of the period.
ACE-42 represents Black 33, a Macchi M.5 associated with United States naval aviation service in Italy. American naval aviators operated from Italian bases during the latter stages of the war, participating in patrol and combat operations over the Adriatic.
The unusual flying-boat configuration makes this aircraft particularly distinctive among conventional Great War fighters.
Available through The Military Workshop – a fascinating John Jenkins aircraft combining Italian aviation design with the early combat history of United States naval aviation.
