GLAD-05 – The Myrmillo
The Murmillo, sometimes rendered Myrmillo, belonged to the heavily armed classes of Roman gladiator and became one of the arena's most recognisable fighting types.
Typically equipped with a large rectangular shield, short sword, protective leg armour and a substantial helmet, the Murmillo relied upon protection and disciplined close combat rather than the mobility of lightly equipped gladiators.
GLAD-05 – The Myrmillo gives a gladiatorial collection another very different fighting style. His heavier equipment contrasts particularly well with the Retiarius, while other pairings can be used to develop a broader arena scene containing several recognisable gladiator types.
Roman audiences understood these distinctions. The equipment was not merely decorative; it helped determine how a bout unfolded, creating advantages and disadvantages that contributed to the spectacle.
With suitable arena groundwork, spectators and additional fighters, GLAD-05 can form part of an impressive recreation of the entertainment culture of Imperial Rome.
Available from The Military Workshop – a powerful John Jenkins Designs Myrmillo bringing the armour, weaponry and specialised combat traditions of the Roman arena into your collection.
