GLAD-08 – The Thracian

Roman gladiatorial contests were carefully constructed spectacles in which different types of fighter were matched according to their weapons, armour and methods of combat. The Thracian was an excellent example of this deliberate contrast.

GLAD-08 – The Thracian represents the Thraex, a gladiator whose smaller shield encouraged a more mobile style of fighting than that of opponents carrying the large scutum. His curved sica could potentially reach around an adversary's shield, while tall greaves compensated for the reduced protection afforded by his own smaller shield.

The Thracian's helmet was another defining feature, traditionally incorporating a broad brim and substantial protection for the face and head. Such equipment made the gladiator instantly recognisable to a Roman audience.

GLAD-08 provides collectors with another pose for this specialised fighting class. Use him opposite a heavier gladiator or combine him with GLAD-06 to show more than one Thracian within a larger arena display.

Available through The Military Workshop – an impressive John Jenkins Designs Thracian adding another historically distinctive combatant to the sands of your Roman arena.
