GLAD-11 – “Victory or Death” #2 – 3 Pieces
“Hail, Emperor, those who are about to die salute you” has become one of the most famous phrases associated with ancient Rome and gladiatorial spectacle.
The Latin expression Ave, imperator, morituri te salutant is often described as the traditional salute of gladiators, although the historical evidence does not show that it was routinely spoken before gladiatorial contests. Its famous recorded use is associated with men taking part in a staged naval spectacle during the reign of Emperor Claudius.
John Jenkins Designs uses that powerful popular image as part of GLAD-11 – “Victory or Death” #2, a three-piece gladiatorial set capturing the atmosphere and theatre of the Roman arena.
The figures can form a self-contained vignette or become part of a much larger arena containing individual combatants, victorious fighters and attendants.
