HITT-04 – Hittite War Chariot – Battle of Kadesh
Few images capture the military power of the Late Bronze Age as effectively as the war chariot.
At the Battle of Kadesh in 1274 BC, chariots played a particularly prominent role. Both the Egyptian and Hittite armies fielded substantial chariot forces, making the battle one of history's most famous early examples of large-scale chariot warfare.
HITT-04 – Hittite War Chariot represents the mobile striking force of King Muwatalli II's army. During the battle, Hittite chariots crossed the Orontes and struck elements of Ramesses II's army while the Egyptian divisions were not yet fully concentrated.
The sudden attack caused considerable disruption and created a crisis for the Egyptians. Ramesses' own monumental inscriptions naturally presented the Pharaoh's response in heroic terms, and modern historians must treat these royal accounts with appropriate caution, but there is little doubt that the chariot action formed the dramatic centre of the battle.
On display, HITT-04 deserves room to move. Place it ahead of massed Hittite infantry, alongside other chariots or sweeping towards an Egyptian formation to convey the speed and momentum these vehicles brought to Bronze Age warfare.
