HMRR-04RN – Eight Hastati – Red Shields
The Hastati occupied the forward portion of the Roman legion during the Middle Republic, forming the first major line of heavy infantry in the famous manipular system. They were expected to absorb the initial pressure of battle and, when circumstances allowed, disrupt the enemy before closing with sword and shield.
HMRR-04RN provides an impressive eight Hastati with red shields, allowing collectors to move beyond individual figures and establish a proper Roman infantry formation.
The Hastati were generally younger men of military age who could afford the equipment expected of Roman heavy infantry. Their large shields offered substantial protection, while the pilum, or heavy javelin, could be thrown as the formations approached one another. Once at close quarters, the sword became the principal weapon.
Eight figures immediately give the Roman line greater visual weight. They can be arranged in ranks, staggered to suggest movement or combined with the four-piece HMRR-04R set to create an even larger body of red-shielded infantry.
Add a Centurion, Signifer and Cornicen nearby and the result becomes an organised Roman formation rather than simply a collection of individual warriors.
