MAC-04B – Three Phalangites with Red Shields
There is a point when a collection of Macedonian soldiers begins to look like a phalanx, and MAC-04B helps reach it.
The set contains three Phalangites with red shields, intended to be combined with the other red-shield releases to increase the depth and variety of the formation.
Sarissa-armed troops could be extremely dangerous on suitable terrain when their front remained intact. The enormous pikes kept enemy infantry at a distance and allowed several ranks to contribute to the fighting simultaneously.
Their vulnerability became more apparent when terrain or battlefield events disrupted the formation. This would become particularly significant in later conflicts between Hellenistic phalanxes and the more tactically flexible Roman legion.
Within an Alexander-era display, however, the phalanx should appear formidable and cohesive. Place MAC-04B firmly within the body of the formation rather than scattering the three figures individually.
