MAC-05B – Three Phalangites with Red Shields
MAC-05B reinforces the red-shield section of the Macedonian army with three additional Phalangites.
One of the most impressive features of a pike formation is the visual continuity created when matching shields and sarissas are repeated across several ranks. The individual soldier becomes part of something much larger.
That was also the tactical principle behind the phalanx. A lone sarissa was awkward; hundreds or thousands used together within a trained formation created a formidable barrier.
Collectors can combine MAC-05B with MAC-02B, MAC-03B, MAC-04B and the later B variants to build a substantial red-shield unit.
Place the figures in depth and keep the spacing relatively close. The more the sarissas overlap visually, the more convincingly the formation communicates its historical battlefield purpose.
