MAC-05N2 – Nine Phalangites with Shields

The victories of Alexander the Great are often associated with spectacular cavalry charges, but behind those famous moments stood the steady pressure of the Macedonian infantry.

MAC-05N2 – Nine Phalangites with Shields provides a substantial body of those soldiers.

At Gaugamela in 331 BC, Alexander's army confronted the much larger forces of the Persian king Darius III. The Macedonian phalanx formed a crucial part of the battle line while Alexander sought the opportunity for a decisive mounted attack.

The phalangites' task demanded discipline. They needed to keep the enemy occupied, preserve the integrity of the line and continue advancing while other elements of the army manoeuvred.

Nine figures give collectors enough troops to reproduce that sense of a solid infantry centre. Combine them with other MAC sets and the unit can become a major visual feature rather than simply a supporting group.

Available from The Military Workshop – an impressive nine-piece John Jenkins Designs Phalangite set representing the infantry backbone behind Alexander's extraordinary conquests.
