MAC-06B – Three Phalangites with Red Shields
A red-shield Macedonian formation gains further weight with MAC-06B – Three Phalangites.
By themselves, these soldiers are individual miniatures. Placed shoulder-to-shoulder and rank behind rank with the other MAC releases, they become part of the military system created by Philip II and used so effectively by Alexander.
The phalanx excelled when advancing cohesively across suitable ground. Its front could be extremely difficult to penetrate, while the sheer depth of the formation added momentum and confidence to the men in the forward ranks.
The red shields give the unit a particularly strong visual presence. Build several ranks before expanding too widely and the resulting block will look much more like a true pike formation.
Cavalry or lighter infantry can then be added around its flanks to represent the combined-arms character of the Macedonian army.
Available from The Military Workshop – three John Jenkins Designs red-shield Phalangites ready to reinforce the dense centre of Alexander's battle line.
