Philip II's reforms gave Macedonia an army capable of dominating the Greek world, culminating in his victory at Chaeronea in 338 BC. Alexander inherited that military system and then used it on an unprecedented series of campaigns.
The phalangites were central to both stories.
Their long sarissas and deep formations could exert enormous pressure against enemy infantry, but success depended upon training and cohesion rather than individual heroics.
