MAC-40 – Prodromoi

Before the heavy cavalry delivered its decisive blow, someone had to find the enemy, watch his movements and protect the army's approach.

That was the world of the Prodromoi.

MAC-40 – Prodromoi represents one of the light cavalry elements associated with the Macedonian army. Their name is commonly understood in the sense of “forerunners” or troops operating ahead of the main force, reflecting their association with scouting and reconnaissance.

Alexander's spectacular Companion cavalry attacks naturally attract attention, but an army campaigning thousands of kilometres from Macedonia depended heavily upon less glamorous mounted duties. Information about roads, terrain, enemy positions and approaching forces could be critical.

Light cavalry could also screen movements, pursue a retreating opponent and operate on the edges of a larger engagement.

MAC-40 is therefore best positioned away from the dense centre of the army. Give the horseman open ground ahead of the infantry or place him on a flank where the figure appears to be scouting beyond the main formation.
