AE019

This striking miniature depicts a personal bodyguard of Cleopatra VII, representing the elite warriors who protected the legendary queen of Ptolemaic Egypt during the final era of the ancient Egyptian kingdom.

Cleopatra VII (69–30 BC) ruled Egypt during one of the most dramatic periods of ancient history, when the Ptolemaic Kingdom was caught between the rising power of Rome and internal struggles for control of the throne. As a monarch, Cleopatra relied heavily on loyal personal guards to protect her person, palace, and authority.

The figure represents the type of elite foreign warrior often employed by Egyptian rulers, particularly Nubian soldiers, who were valued throughout Egyptian history for their strength, loyalty, and martial reputation. Nubian warriors had long served as soldiers and guards in Egyptian armies due to their renowned skills in combat and archery.

During Cleopatra’s reign, Egypt’s military forces reflected the multicultural nature of the Ptolemaic kingdom, combining Egyptian traditions with Greek, Macedonian, Nubian, and mercenary influences. Royal guards were selected not only for their fighting ability but also for their personal loyalty to the ruler.
