DD413 portrays a kneeling British rifleman taking cover while remaining ready to move or engage the enemy. The pose reflects the realities of the Normandy landings, where infantrymen frequently had to pause behind obstacles, beach defenses, shell craters, or natural cover while waiting for the next advance.

Gold Beach was the central British landing beach during Operation Overlord. The assault was carried out by the 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Division, with the 6th Battalion, The Green Howards among the units landing there. Their objectives included breaking through the German coastal defenses and advancing inland toward key positions.
