DD414

Despite being under enemy fire this soldier takes careful aim as he moves forward.

The figure represents the British landings on Gold Beach, one of the five Allied invasion beaches on D-Day. The 50th (Northumbrian) Division landed there with the objective of breaking through German coastal defenses and advancing inland toward key objectives in Normandy.

The 6th Battalion, The Green Howards was part of the assault force and included Company Sergeant Major Stanley Hollis, the only British serviceman awarded the Victoria Cross for actions on D-Day.
