Another useful addition to the ranks of the matchlock-firing Arquebusiers.

The figure depicts an ashigaru (foot soldier) firing a tanegashima (Japanese matchlock arquebus) from a kneeling position. By 1600, arquebus-armed ashigaru had become a dominant force on Japanese battlefields after firearms were introduced by Portuguese traders in 1543. Massed formations of these soldiers could deliver disciplined volleys capable of breaking cavalry charges and defeating heavily armored samurai.
