Their fate
During the collapse of imperial Russia in the Russian Revolution, the entire family was imprisoned.
In 1918, they were executed by Bolshevik forces in Yekaterinburg along with their parents and brother.
The “Anastasia survival myth”
For decades, there were rumors that Anastasia (and sometimes Maria) survived the execution. This led to:
- Multiple impostors claiming to be Anastasia
- A long-running mystery in popular culture
- Later DNA evidence confirming the entire family died in 1918
