Buffalo Hump was a renowned Penateka Comanche chief during the early to mid-19th century. Widely admired for his skill as both a warrior and a leader, he guided his people through a period of enormous change as settlers, traders, and military expeditions increasingly pushed into Comanche territory. His leadership helped unite Comanche bands in defence of their homeland and traditional way of life.
Perhaps best known for leading the Great Raid of 1840, Buffalo Hump commanded hundreds of Comanche warriors in one of the largest mounted raids in Texas history. The campaign demonstrated the remarkable horsemanship, tactical mobility, and battlefield effectiveness for which the Comanche became famous. Even as conflict with the United States intensified, Buffalo Hump later sought peace for his people, recognising the changing realities facing the Southern Plains.
