AZ-20 - Demon of the Dark | John Jenkins Designs

This striking figure represents the Aztec Tlacochcalcatl wearing the distinctive Tzitzimitl, or "Demon of the Dark", war-suit associated with rulers and senior chieftains of the Aztec Empire.

The elaborate costume reflects the importance of military rank and symbolic dress within Aztec society. High-ranking warriors were distinguished by impressive garments, featherwork and ceremonial equipment that identified their position within the military hierarchy.

The Aztec Empire flourished during the 14th, 15th and early 16th centuries, expanding its influence across much of central Mexico through military conquest and political alliances. Its armies included experienced warriors whose achievements in battle could bring considerable prestige and advancement.

Elite warriors played an important role in the military organisation of the empire. Their distinctive costumes and equipment were not simply decorative but reflected the relationship between military accomplishment, social status and religious traditions.

The Tzitzimitl war-suit was particularly associated with the highest-ranking figures, making this an unusual and commanding addition to the Aztec collection.

This figure is especially suited to displays featuring Aztec chieftains, military commanders and elite warriors, highlighting the impressive appearance and symbolism of the empire's military leadership.
