MK251 – Fighting Crusader Priest with Warhammer & Shield
During the Crusades, not all men of the Church remained behind monastery walls. A number of clergy accompanied crusading armies as chaplains, advisors and, on occasion, warriors. Medieval tradition held that ordained priests should not shed blood with edged weapons, leading to the popular image of warrior clerics carrying maces or warhammers into battle. While the historical accuracy of this practice is sometimes debated, the image of the fighting priest has become one of the enduring legends of the Crusading era.
Throughout the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, crusading armies marching to the Holy Land often included priests who inspired soldiers, celebrated Mass and encouraged men before battle. In times of desperate fighting, some clergy are recorded as having taken up arms to defend themselves, their comrades and the Christian cause.
The Military Workshop's MK251 – Fighting Crusader Priest with Warhammer & Shield captures this dramatic and iconic figure of medieval warfare. Depicted wielding a formidable warhammer and carrying a shield emblazoned with the symbols of faith, this model perfectly combines the spiritual and martial aspects of the Crusading age.
Rich in historical character and finely detailed, this figure is ideal for recreating scenes from the Crusades, medieval sieges and battles of faith and chivalry.
An outstanding addition for collectors and enthusiasts of medieval history, this piece celebrates one of the most fascinating and legendary figures of the Middle Ages—the warrior priest who marched alongside kings and knights in the struggle for the Holy Land.
Advancing forward with a particularly cruel and vicious instrument of war this Flemish Priest goes into battle.
