The men of the 95th (Rifle) Regiment of Foot were among the most elite soldiers of the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars. Formed in 1800 as the Experimental Corps of Riflemen, they were trained to operate as skirmishers and marksmen rather than conventional line infantry. Clad in distinctive rifle-green uniforms and armed with the accurate but slower-loading Baker rifle, the men of the 95th earned a formidable reputation on the battlefields of the Peninsular War and at Waterloo. Their marksmanship, independence and discipline made them one of the most respected units in Wellington's army.
Unlike the standard Brown Bess musket carried by most British infantry, the Baker rifle required a tighter-fitting ball and more careful loading procedure, reducing the rate of fire but greatly increasing accuracy. Riflemen often fought in pairs or small groups, using cover and taking carefully aimed shots at enemy officers, artillery crews and key targets. The act of loading and reloading was therefore a critical part of their battlefield effectiveness, demanding both skill and composure under fire.
