TX-02 - Elite Warrior | John Jenkins Designs
This Tlaxcaltec Elite Warrior represents a high-ranking member of the military forces of Tlaxcala during the period of the Spanish conquest of Mexico.
The figure is distinguished by an elaborate feathered costume and the prominent back ornament associated with the community of Tizatlan. The great white heron was an important symbol of this community, while the warrior's clothing features large yellow feathers and a red-and-white headband associated with Tlaxcaltec identity.
The Tlaxcaltecs were a fiercely independent Nahua people who resisted attempts by the Aztec Triple Alliance to conquer their territory. Their warriors participated in the conflicts known as the Flower Wars, which involved the capture of enemy combatants and formed an important part of the military and religious traditions of central Mexico.
When Hernán Cortés arrived in 1519, the Tlaxcaltecs eventually allied themselves with the Spanish expedition. Their considerable military contribution was instrumental in the campaign that led to the capture of Tenochtitlan in 1521.
This distinctive elite warrior is an excellent addition to the Tlaxcaltec collection, particularly when displayed alongside the Tlaxcaltec Chieftain, other warriors and Spanish conquistadors.
