TX-04 - Warrior | John Jenkins Designs
This Tlaxcaltec Warrior represents a soldier from the independent state of Tlaxcala, whose people became important participants in the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire during the early 16th century.
The Tlaxcaltecs were among the principal enemies of the Aztec Triple Alliance. Although the Aztecs had successfully expanded their influence over much of central Mexico, they never managed to conquer Tlaxcala. The continued independence of the Tlaxcaltecs made them formidable opponents of Aztec power.
Warfare was an important part of life in the region, with warriors participating in conflicts known as the Flower Wars. These battles were associated with the capture of enemy soldiers and the military traditions of the participating communities.
Following the arrival of Hernán Cortés in 1519, the Tlaxcaltecs formed an alliance with the Spanish. Their knowledge of the region, considerable fighting strength and longstanding opposition to the Aztecs made them valuable allies during the campaign against Tenochtitlan.
This individual warrior complements the other Tlaxcaltec figures in the collection, allowing collectors to build larger indigenous infantry formations and recreate scenes from the conquest of Mexico.
Now available from The Military Workshop.
