AL047 – Galloping Horse #1
Bring speed, movement, and authenticity to your Australian Light Horse display with AL047 – Galloping Horse #1, a beautifully sculpted horse from Thomas Gunn Miniatures. Available from The Military Workshop, this dynamic model perfectly captures the power, endurance, and agility of the horses that became inseparable from the legend of Australia's mounted troops during the First World War.
The success of the Australian Light Horse depended as much on their horses as on the skill of the men who rode them. Most Australian troopers were mounted on the famous Waler, a hardy horse bred to thrive in the harsh Australian climate. Strong, intelligent, and remarkably resilient, the Waler proved ideally suited to the demanding conditions of the Middle East, carrying its rider across vast desert landscapes with minimal food and water while remaining calm under enemy fire.
Throughout the campaigns in Gallipoli, Sinai, and Palestine, the horses of the Australian Light Horse became legendary for their stamina and reliability. They carried their riders over countless kilometres of unforgiving terrain, enabling rapid reconnaissance, surprise attacks, and the swift manoeuvres that made the Light Horse such an effective fighting force. During the famous Charge of Beersheba on 31 October 1917, these magnificent horses galloped into history as Australian troopers captured the strategically vital town in one of the last great mounted charges ever undertaken.
Expertly sculpted and beautifully hand-painted, AL047 – Galloping Horse #1 captures the athleticism and grace of a Waler at full stride. Its realistic anatomy, flowing movement, and meticulous attention to detail make it the perfect mount for creating dynamic Australian Light Horse scenes or expanding an existing mounted collection.
Whether paired with a mounted trooper or displayed as part of a larger First World War diorama, AL047 – Galloping Horse #1 is a fitting tribute to the remarkable horses whose courage and endurance helped shape Australia's military history.
