GMPM-06 – Minamoto Standard Bearer | John Jenkins Designs

The Genpei War of 1180–1185 was one of the defining conflicts of medieval Japan, fought between the rival Minamoto and Taira clans for political and military supremacy. The eventual Minamoto victory helped bring an end to Taira dominance and paved the way for the establishment of the Kamakura shogunate under Minamoto no Yoritomo.

GMPM-06 – Minamoto Standard Bearer represents one of the men entrusted with carrying the identifying colours of the Minamoto forces. On a battlefield where opposing warriors could be similarly armed and dressed, standards provided an important visual point of reference for allegiance, command and the position of individual contingents.

The Minamoto became particularly associated with white banners, standing in clear contrast to the red standards traditionally linked with their Taira rivals. A standard bearer therefore makes a natural centrepiece within a larger formation, adding both height and an unmistakable sense of identity.
