During the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, Zulu warriors achieved one of the British Empire's most famous defeats at the Battle of Isandlwana. Following the battle, thousands of modern Martini-Henry rifles and vast quantities of ammunition fell into Zulu hands. Warriors were often depicted collecting, counting and redistributing captured weapons, a testament to the adaptability and resourcefulness of the Zulu army. Although traditional weapons such as the assegai and cowhide shield remained central to Zulu warfare, firearms increasingly became part of their military arsenal during the conflict.
