DD407 – Churchill & The Roaring Lion | King & Country
DD407 “Churchill & The Roaring Lion” recreates one of the most famous photographic moments of the Second World War and the creation of one of the 20th century’s most recognisable portraits.
On 30 December 1941, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was in Ottawa, Canada, where he addressed the Canadian Parliament on the progress of the war.
Following his speech, a short photographic session was arranged by Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King. Canadian-Armenian photographer Yousuf Karsh was selected to take the photographs and was told he had only a very brief period in which to complete the session.
Churchill entered the room having just lit one of his famous cigars. Karsh was concerned that the cigar smoke would interfere with the photograph and asked the Prime Minister to put it aside.
Churchill refused.
Karsh then approached Churchill, apologised and quickly removed the cigar himself. Returning to his camera, the photographer was confronted by an intensely displeased Churchill glaring directly towards him.
That extraordinary expression was captured forever in the photograph that became known as “The Roaring Lion.”
The portrait went on to become one of the defining images of Churchill and played an important role in establishing Karsh’s international reputation.
King & Country recreates that historic moment with Churchill standing before Karsh while the photographer calmly operates his camera.
The set also includes the camera and tripod together with a three-dimensional room setting modelled on the actual room in Ottawa where the celebrated portrait was taken.
A fascinating set combining military, political and photographic history, DD407 recreates the exact moment an iconic image was born.
Will be available from The Military Workshop.
