ROM098 – Praetorian Archer Preparing To Fire | King & Country
ROM098 “Praetorian Archer Preparing To Fire” portrays a member of Ancient Rome’s elite Praetorian Guard moving forward while carefully studying his target, judging the distance and preparing to fire.
The Praetorian Guard was established by Emperor Augustus in 27 BC as an elite imperial bodyguard whose responsibilities included protecting the emperor and his family while also helping maintain law and order within Rome.
The title “Praetorian Guard” derived from the Latin word praetorium, referring to the headquarters occupied by a Roman commander where selected soldiers guarded the senior officer.
Augustus formalised these soldiers into a permanent standing force initially organised into nine cohorts, later expanded to ten and numbering almost 5,000 men.
The Praetorians enjoyed privileges above those of ordinary legionaries, including substantially higher pay, better living conditions and superior-quality armour based upon the familiar Lorica Segmentata.
They were also permitted to use purple, the noble colour associated with the emperor, reflecting their prestigious position and personal loyalty to him.
Their duties went beyond simple bodyguard work. Praetorians also helped maintain security within Rome, acted as crowd handlers at the great public games and could even serve as emergency firefighters when called upon.
ROM098 is one of four archers in King & Country’s first group of fighting Praetorian Guard figures.
Whether this soldier is preparing to defend the emperor or simply practising his skills at the fortified Castra Praetoria is left to the collector.
Will be available from The Military Workshop.
