Few personalities are more closely associated with the Battle of the Alamo than General Antonio López de Santa Anna.
President and military leader of Mexico, Santa Anna personally led the army that marched into Texas during the rebellion of 1835–36. After besieging the Alamo, his forces launched their final assault on 6 March 1836, overwhelming the defenders.
His campaign continued until the decisive Mexican defeat at San Jacinto on 21 April 1836, where Santa Anna was captured.
