GG57-05 – 57th Regiment, the Eshowe Relief Column – Zulu Wars
Following the shocking defeat at Isandlwana, British commanders moved swiftly to relieve the besieged garrison at Eshowe, where Colonel Charles Pearson and his men had been surrounded by Zulu forces for over two months. The relief expedition, commanded by Lord Chelmsford, brought together experienced regiments including the 57th (West Middlesex) Regiment of Foot, whose soldiers marched through hostile territory determined to reach their isolated comrades.
The campaign culminated in the Battle of Gingindlovu on 2 April 1879. Forming a disciplined defensive square, British infantry repelled repeated Zulu attacks before advancing to lift the siege of Eshowe. The success of the operation restored confidence within the British Army and demonstrated the effectiveness of disciplined infantry supported by artillery and Gatling guns against determined assaults.
This finely crafted figure represents one of the soldiers who took part in this historic advance. Every element of the uniform has been faithfully reproduced, from the distinctive Victorian equipment to the carefully sculpted facial features and natural marching posture. The rich hand-painted finish brings the figure to life, while the quality of the sculpt ensures it looks impressive whether displayed individually or alongside the rest of the Relief Column.
Collectors who appreciate the Anglo-Zulu War will recognise the importance of this campaign, and The Military Workshop is proud to offer a figure that captures both the history and the remarkable craftsmanship expected by discerning enthusiasts.
