GG57-05 – 57th Regiment – The Eshowe Relief Column

By late March 1879, the British garrison at Eshowe had been isolated for more than two months. Lord Chelmsford organised a relief column and advanced towards the besieged position, constructing a fortified camp near Gingindlovu on the way.

The 57th Regiment formed part of this force and fought during the Battle of Gingindlovu on 2 April 1879.

GG57-05 represents soldiers of the West Middlesex Regiment during this important phase of the campaign.

Surrounded by fellow infantry from the relief column, the figures can become part of an extensive recreation of the British defensive position at Gingindlovu.
