GGZ-29 – inGobamakhosi Regiment – Zulu Warrior with Martini-Henry – Battle of Gingindlovu
The Battle of Gingindlovu, fought on 2 April 1879, was a major engagement during Lord Chelmsford's advance to relieve the British garrison at Eshowe. A large Zulu force attacked the prepared British position but encountered concentrated rifle, artillery and rapid-fire weapon fire from the defenders.
Among the Zulu regiments involved was the inGobamakhosi, represented in this release by a warrior carrying a Martini-Henry rifle.
The weapon is an especially interesting detail. Following earlier fighting in the campaign, including the catastrophic British defeat at Isandlwana, captured British rifles and ammunition could find their way into Zulu hands. Firearms were therefore part of the Zulu arsenal, although levels of marksmanship, ammunition supply and familiarity with different weapons varied considerably.
GGZ-29 allows this aspect of the campaign to be represented directly. Rather than every Zulu warrior carrying only the traditional spear and shield, the Martini-Henry introduces a visual reminder that the Zulu army of 1879 also employed firearms.
Place him among the inGobamakhosi warriors at Gingindlovu or slightly behind the leading ranks as part of the firearm-equipped element of the regiment.
