HITT-08A – Two Hittite Spearmen – Battle of Kadesh, 1274 BC
Behind the spectacular chariots of the Hittite Empire stood the infantry who gave its armies the manpower required to occupy ground, support mobile forces and continue fighting once the initial clash had taken place.
HITT-08A provides two Hittite spearmen representing the army of King Muwatalli II at the Battle of Kadesh.
The spear was one of the fundamental weapons of ancient warfare. Relatively straightforward to manufacture compared with more complex weapons, it offered useful reach and could be employed by troops fighting together in organised formations.
At Kadesh, the Hittite king commanded not only troops from the core of his empire but forces drawn from allied and subject territories. This reflected the considerable extent of Hittite political influence during the 13th century BC.
These two figures are excellent for beginning or expanding the infantry component behind the chariots. Mixed with other HITT-08 and HITT-09 variations, they allow the ranks to develop without looking overly repetitive.
