HMRR-04R – Four Hastati – Roman Army of the Mid-Republic

The Hastati formed one of the best-known elements of the Roman legion during the Middle Republic.

In the traditional manipular system described for Republican Rome, the Hastati generally formed the first main line of heavy infantry, with the Principes behind them and the veteran Triarii forming a final reserve.

HMRR-04R provides four Hastati, giving collectors an immediate foundation for the front ranks of a Mid-Republican Roman legion.

Their equipment reflected Rome's increasingly sophisticated infantry warfare. The large shield offered substantial protection, while the pilum, a heavy throwing javelin, could be cast before the soldiers closed with the enemy. The sword then became central once combat reached close quarters.

The manipular legion gave Rome a flexible system well suited to the varied enemies and terrain encountered during its expansion. These were the soldiers who belonged to the military world of Rome's struggles in Italy and, later, its great contests with Carthage.

Four figures allow the beginnings of a proper infantry formation rather than an isolated warrior. Add further Hastati, a Centurion, Signifer and Cornicen and the display can quickly develop into an organised Roman battle line.

Available through The Military Workshop – an impressive four-piece John Jenkins Designs Hastati set bringing the front ranks of Rome's Mid-Republican legion into your ancient collection.
