HMRR-05R – Hastati
Before Rome's legions became the professional imperial army familiar to many collectors, the Republic relied upon a remarkably flexible system of infantry organised into smaller tactical units known as maniples. At the front of this formation stood the Hastati—younger soldiers expected to make the first serious contact with the enemy.
HMRR-05R – Hastati from John Jenkins Designs captures one of these Republican Roman warriors during a period when Rome was transforming itself from an Italian power into the dominant force of the Mediterranean.
Typically equipped with the pilum, sword and shield, the Hastati formed the first of Rome's principal heavy infantry lines. If they could not overcome their opponents, they could withdraw through the formation and allow the more experienced Principes behind them to continue the battle.
Available from The Military Workshop, HMRR-05R is a superb figure for collectors building the armies of the Mid-Republican Roman period, particularly displays depicting Rome's wars against Carthage and its other Mediterranean rivals.
