Rome's battlefield strength did not simply come from brave soldiers—it came from an increasingly sophisticated system that allowed different lines of infantry to support one another.

The Hastati occupied the forward line of the famous triplex acies formation. These younger legionaries were expected to bear the initial weight of battle, advancing after the screening troops had completed their work and engaging the enemy at close quarters.

John Jenkins Designs' HMRR-05Y – Hastati, available through The Military Workshop, represents one of these soldiers from the Roman Army of the Mid-Republic.
