Firing from the hip this soldier provides ‘covering-fire’ for his mates as they advance towards the enemy.

The Bren gun was the standard British section light machine gun during World War II. Its high accuracy and reliability made it the key support weapon of a British infantry section, normally operated by a gunner with assistance from a second soldier carrying ammunition magazines and equipment.

The figure represents the men of the 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Division landing at Gold Beach, the central British landing area during Operation Overlord. The division's assault included the 69th Infantry Brigade, whose 6th Battalion, The Green Howards fought inland after securing the beachhead.
