GMPT-03 – Taira no Munemori

The story of Taira no Munemori is closely connected with the dramatic decline of a clan that had once dominated the Imperial court.

Following the death of his father, Taira no Kiyomori, Munemori became one of the principal leaders of the Taira during the continuing war against the Minamoto.

As Minamoto pressure increased, the Taira were forced away from Kyoto and carried the young Emperor Antoku and the Imperial regalia with them. The conflict eventually culminated in the naval Battle of Dan-no-ura on 25 April 1185, where the Taira suffered their final decisive defeat.

Unlike several prominent Taira figures who died during the battle, Munemori was captured. He was subsequently executed, marking another grim chapter in the destruction of Taira power.

GMPT-03 – Taira no Munemori therefore represents far more than another samurai. He was a senior figure at the centre of one of the great political and military upheavals of medieval Japan.

Displayed with Tomomori, Noritsune and the wider Taira range, he helps create a collection that tells the story from the losing side as well as that of the victorious Minamoto.
