M-WIN-15 – Sillidar Cavalry represents another important component of Maratha mounted warfare.

A Sillidar was generally expected to provide and maintain his own horse and equipment, distinguishing him from the Bargir system in which mounts could be supplied by the state or military establishment.

This arrangement produced mounted warriors whose horse and equipment represented a significant personal investment. In return, Sillidar cavalry formed an important part of the highly mobile forces for which the Marathas became renowned.

Maratha cavalry was particularly effective when warfare involved movement over great distances. Reconnaissance, raiding and attacks against communications or supplies could place tremendous pressure upon an opponent even before a major battle occurred.

The mounted figure gives an Indian battlefield display valuable height and motion. Combine several cavalry releases across an open flank and they can suggest a much larger force manoeuvring around the enemy.
