M-WIN-05 – Bargir – Maratha Cavalry

The Maratha military system became famous for the mobility of its cavalry, and among its mounted troops were the Bargirs.

Unlike the Sillidars, who generally provided their own horse and equipment, Bargirs were mounted on horses supplied through the state or their military employer. This distinction reflected different systems of cavalry service within the Maratha forces.

M-WIN-05 – Bargir therefore represents more than simply another mounted warrior. He belongs to an important cavalry tradition that helped the Marathas project military power across large areas of the Indian subcontinent.

Speed and mobility allowed Maratha horsemen to scout, raid, disrupt communications and threaten an opponent's supply system. Their effectiveness could force less mobile armies to react continually to rapidly changing threats.

In miniature, the Bargir is best given some room. Position him ahead of a larger cavalry body, on a flank or as part of a fast-moving mounted group rather than burying him inside an infantry formation.

Available from The Military Workshop – a superb John Jenkins Designs Bargir bringing the speed and mobility of Maratha cavalry warfare to the collection.
