CS01141 – Cpt. Prien | The Collectors Showcase

During the Second World War (1939–1945), the German Kriegsmarine's U-Boat fleet played a major role in the Battle of the Atlantic, attempting to sever Britain's vital supply routes by attacking Allied merchant shipping. Among Germany's most celebrated submarine commanders was Kapitänleutnant Günther Prien, whose daring exploits made him one of the most recognisable figures of the early submarine war.

Born in 1908, Günther Prien entered the German Navy in 1933 and eventually took command of U-47, a Type VIIB submarine that would become one of the most famous German U-Boats of the conflict.

Prien achieved international notoriety on the night of 13–14 October 1939, when he successfully penetrated the heavily defended British naval anchorage at Scapa Flow, located in Scotland's Orkney Islands. In a remarkable operation, U-47 slipped through the harbour's defences and launched torpedoes against the British battleship HMS Royal Oak.

The attack resulted in the sinking of Royal Oak and the tragic loss of 835 British sailors, making it one of the Royal Navy's most devastating early wartime losses. Prien and his crew subsequently escaped the harbour and returned to Germany, where they received a hero's welcome and considerable attention from Nazi propaganda.

Following this operation, Prien became known as "The Bull of Scapa Flow", a nickname associated with the charging bull emblem displayed on U-47's conning tower.

Throughout his wartime career, Prien continued to command U-47 during numerous Atlantic patrols, attacking Allied shipping as the submarine campaign intensified. However, on 7 March 1941, U-47 disappeared in the North Atlantic with all hands. The precise circumstances surrounding the submarine's loss remain uncertain.

The Collectors Showcase CS01141 Cpt. Prien recreates this famous German submarine commander in a relaxed leaning pose, reflecting the appearance of a Kriegsmarine U-Boat captain during the early years of World War II.

Expertly sculpted and hand-painted, this detailed miniature is designed to complement The Collectors Showcase German U-Boat collection, including the impressive U-96 and U-552 conning tower displays.

An excellent addition for collectors of World War II naval history, this figure brings an important historical personality to German submarine displays and Battle of the Atlantic dioramas.
